Glass surrounds us throughout our lives–often when there is a single scratch or area of discoloration on it, it’s very noticeable. The steps you use in glass cleaning and maintenance not only help protect the aesthetics of the surface but can also aid in maintaining glass clarity for years to come. At Northern Utah Glass, we install a wide range of glass products each year, and we want you to know what you can do to properly maintain your system.

How Do You Properly Clean Glass?

Numerous methods exist for properly cleaning glass, and no one way is right for all glass types. The simplest of rules to follow is that less is more. Less chemicals, less abrasion, and less heat are all factors that could protect your glass. Follow these tips:

  • Clean glass from the top down.
  • Use only grit-free cloths to clean the surface of the glass.
  • Use a wash solution that only contains mild soap or detergents without hydrofluoric acid.
  • After washing the window or other glass surface, rinse it thoroughly.
  • Use a squeegee to remove water right away

The Surface of Glass Matters

Installing high-quality glass makes a big difference in the long term. Consider that the surface of glass is not necessarily as smooth as it may seem. The more substances and materials rub against it, even a cloth, the more damage and tiny grooves occur, which ultimately distorts the clarity of the glass.

To protect the surface, never use abrasives, alkaline materials, or harsh cleaners on glass. They will damage the surface and cloud the glass, making maintaining glass clarity challenging. In situations where there is glazing material or grease on the surface, choose a commercial solvent such as xylene or toluene. You can also use mineral spirits and naphtha.
